Chlorite: A deleterious constituent with respect to freeze-thaw durability of concrete aggregates
AbstractSevere freeze-thaw losses in amounts between 30 to 40 percent occurred in testing hydrothermally altered (propylitized) volcanic rocks containing more than 20 percent chlorite at two dams. Further analyses however indicate that the losses are structural with seams, clots and fissures of chlorite (SCF structure) being the culprit. Propylitization with production of chlorite is not indicative of poor freeze-thaw durability as rock containing between 20 to 30 percent chlorite, but not possessing the SCF structure, exhibits good freeze-thaw durability.
