Out-of-plane bending of masonry wallette strengthened with geosynthetic
Abstract The out-of-plane flexural strength of masonry wallettes with different strengthening patterns using geotextile was studied experimentally and numerically. Three different patterns viz. parallel, diagonal and cross were used as strengthening of the wallettes on both sides. From the experimental study, it has been ascertained that strengthening using geosynthetic enhanced the load-carrying, displacement, stiffness, ductility, flexural strength and energy dissipation capacity remarkably being the greatest effect achieved using the cross pattern. Finite element ANSYS non-linear micro modelling is carried out to predict the out-of-plane performance of masonry wallettes before and after strengthening. It was also observed less brittle behaviour in comparison to the wallette without strengthening. Therefore, geosynthetic can be suitable for strengthening of the masonry buildings against out-of-plane bending during an earthquake due to low cost, ready availability and high strength.
