Geotechnical study of the north and northwest coast of the Arabian Gulf
Abstract Soil conditions in two adjacent regions on the north and northwest coast of the Arabian Gulf were studied using numerous boreholes in southern Iraq (Region I) and northern Kuwait (Region II). The exploration included intensive sampling and standard penetration soundings in the field. Laboratory tests included classification and indexing, strength and compressibility tests. Additionally, extensive chemical analyses were carried out on soil samples to determine the chemical contents detrimental to concrete. The results indicate that the soil profile in Region I consists of a surficial layer of deep soft clay excepting the western band where sand and gravel of Dibdibba origin crop out at the surface. The sub-soil in Region II typically consists of a top veneer of wind-blown sand followed by silty sand often turning calcareous. The paper provides typical ranges of soil parameters and it also attempts to identify anticipated soil and construction problems. Foundation recommendations of a general nature are also included.
