Water movement in porous building materials—IX. The water absorption and sorptivity of concretes
Abstract The theory of unsaturated flow is applied to the absorption of water by portland cement concretes. Literature data published by MacInnis and Nathawad are reanalysed and new laboratory data presented, from which sorptivity values are derived. The variation of sorptivity with mix and compaction is discussed. The sorptivity is relatively insensitive to water: cement ratio, but is sharply reduced by prolonged ramming.
