Fabric controls on bulk strength properties of some rhyolites
Abstract The variability of fabric strength is important in engineering geological investigations. For two rhyolite suites, Shore hardness was found to be sensitive to small-scale strength variations in rock fabric. The sum of Shore hardness values from individual fabric subunits within the rock correlates well with the compressive strength of core specimens. From this it is demonstrated that pitchstones fail as a consequence of the presence and pervasiveness of fractures, and that the failure mode of lithophysal rhyolites is a consequence of the proportion of voids.
