The construction and operation of a 5 MW windfarm
AbstractIn December 1984, a 25m diameter, full span control 3 bladed rotor prototype wind turbine rated at 200 KW was installed at a site near Ilfracombe in Devon in the U.K. and connected to the local electricity grid. Following the successful operation of this machine, twenty 250 KW rated derivatives were installed in Altamont Pass, California in 1986 and connected to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company Grid. Operation commenced on January 1st, 1987 and by the late September the windfarm had generated over 10 million kilowatt hours with an availability of 95% and a capacity factor of 31%. This paper gives details of the machines and the operational performance of the windfarm.
