The potential of cement kiln dust for the stabilization of dune sand in highway construction
AbstractThis paper presents the effects of cement kiln dust (CKD) on the important geotechnical properties of dune sand. Sand was stabilized with various mix proportions. Mix proportions (%CKD + %sand) were 0 + 100, 25 + 75, 50 + 50, 75 + 25 and 100 + 0. The following geotechnical properties of CKD stabilized sand were studied: maximum dry density, optimum moisture content, unconfined compressive strength and CBR characteristics. The test results show that sand stabilized with CKD can be utilized for base materials in highway construction. From the point of view of 7-day compressive strength, California bearing ratio and economy, this study recommends a mix proportion of 30% CKD + 70% sand for base materials.
