Increasing the feed value of forestry waste by ammonia freeze explosion treatment
AbstractAmmonia freeze explosion treatment decreased the lignin content of aspen twigs and chips by 30% and aspen bark by 20%. This resulted in increased accessibility of lignocellulose to enzyme hydrolysis and increased the in vitro digestibility of the woody material. The residual ammonia in the substrate increased the crude protein feed value from 0 to 12–20%. The treated aspen waste may be used as a roughage component of ruminant diet.
