Travel and location behavior: State of the art and research opportunities
Abstract This review is divided into two main sections. The first section reviews the theoretical and methodological basis of current travel-demand analysis, with particular emphasis on the role of utility theory. The main concepts and techniques associated with utility-theoretic travel demand models are summarized, important outstanding questions concerning the utility-theoretic approach are identified, and the relations between utility-based and alternative approaches to travel demand analysis are discussed. The second section treats substantive problems in travel demand analysis. The success that has been achieved so far in solving substantive problems is summarized, and a variety of important unsolved problems are identified.
