Redistribution of snow in the mountains under the effect of heavy snow-storms
Abstract Accumulation and redistribution of snow in the mountains has considerable effects on snow transport, glacier dynamics, snow drifts and avalanche danger. However, the properties of drifting snow in the mountains have been undertaken in the USSR during recent years, revealing that the role of upper snow-storms in the redistribution of snow in the mountains differs greatly from that of deflation snow-storms. Deflation snow-storms transport snow within small, separated catchment-basins, and thus cause snow-drifts (sugroby) and cornices on the leeward slopes and crests. Strong upper snow-storms are the main agent of mountain snow redistribution, forming the belt of excessive snow accumulation on the leeward macroslopes. The majority of glaciers in highlands, as well as the zone of high avalanche activity, coincide with this belt.
