Utilization of waste chalk from fertilizer industry as filler in building materials
Abstract Large quantities of calcium carbonate (Chalk) in the form of fine powder are produced as a by-product in the fertilizer industry producing ammonium sulphate from gypsum. Investigations were carried out at CBRI to explore the suitability of this waste as filter in bitumen mastics, cement concrete flooring tiles and masonry cement by substituting it for conventional fillers such as limestones or dolomite powders. Results have shown that all three products can be produced conforming to Indian Standard Specifications by using powdery calcium carbonate waste, to varying extents, depending upon the type of product. It has been found that replacement of dolomite powder as filler in bitumen mastics can be affected by the chalk up to 55%. Chalk can, however, wholly replace the limestone powder used as a filler fraction in cement concrete tiles both in plain as well as terrazzo type.
