Ranching and redistribution after apartheid
AbstractRecent changes in South Africa urgently require the development of alternative economic and social policies. A key area of concern relates to the poverty stricken conditions in which the bulk of the rural population have lived under the system of apartheid. In the future, considerable pressure will be brought to bear to make more resources available to the population of the bantustans and the redistribution of land has already been identified as a major area for debate. This article examines the promotion of livestock ranching as one area of potential development. Comparing data from the white areas of South Africa and the bantustans, the article goes on to discuss the future basis for livestock development programmes based upon alternative forms of land redistribution.
