Agribusiness in Singapore: a capital-intensive service
AbstractAgriculture in Singapore had become increasingly marginalised economically and spatially as, following the declaration of internal independence in 1959, the country made a major effort to diversify from trade into manufacturing. High priority was accorded to the progression through import substitution to export-oriented and increasingly capital and technologically intensive production, to the development of financial and business services and to public housing. But in the mid-1980s, as a result of government policy decisions, agriculture, which had been languishing under the pressure of land competition, labour costs and smallscale operation, was targeted for reform. This sector is now in the process of becoming a capital-intensive, high technology, research and development-based service for the region. The transformation, initiated and directed by government, is replicating much of the sequence and many of the measures employed earlier in the development of manufacturing.
