Application of the Gumbel III law to seismic data from southern Spain
Abstract All earthquakes with epicenters in the southern part (latitude λ < 40°N) of peninsular Spain, contained in the Spanish catalogue (1982 version), are analysed by means of extreme-value techniques. Return period and variance for each degree of I o, together with correlation matrices for the parameters of the Gumbel III distribution, are obtained from the complete set of data and from three subsets corresponding to different regions. The dependence of these return periods on sample characteristics are also analyzed. Finally, a comparison is made of the results obtained by Gumbel I and Gumbel III distributions.
