Some reflections on journey to work studies in Sydney, Toronto, New York, (London and Paris)
Abstract A number of detailed studies of the journey to work in major world conurbations using 1971 census data have now been reported. In some cases, simultaneous surveys of actual travel, rather than the normal travel obtained in censuses, have also been obtained. Various analysis techniques have been adopted for such studies, according to the type of questions being addressed. It is time to take stock, see what has been achieved, what lessons can be learnt from our successes, and our failures, and whether our understanding of the relationship between travel and city structure has been increased by such studies.
