AbstractThis article sets the backdrop for the current state of urban development in Budapest by providing a geographical and historical profile of Hungary's capital city, dividing Budapest's development policy over 40 years of socialist rule into three distinct periods. It characterizes development efforts over that period as disjointed bursts of action targeting selected areas only, each burst producing more urban problems than it solved. The recent realignment of urban development management between the districts and the capital creates new uncertainities. The profile suggests that successful resolution of problems depends on developing a new style of urban management in Budapest.
