Rural revitalization through territorial distinctiveness: The use of geographical indications in Turkey
Highlights GIs can be an alternative means of revitalising rural regions. A small volume of production, the reproduction of territorial quality and the horizontal relations in decision-making dictate the effectiveness and the redistributive potential of GI projects in a positive way. GIs can sustain rural revitalization only through strong collective action that challenges the continual pressure of economies of scale. Legal food production standards should be redefined and restructured in such a way that rural actors are able to preserve and improve their traditional mode of production.
