AbstractAlthough the human right to adequate housing exists within many international human rights treaties and other legal texts, this right has remained far more often in the realms of obscurity than action. Yet when viewed from a global perspective in many ways housing rights are finally coming of age. Legal and practical emphasis on this vaguely defined right has arisen at all levels — from the grassroots to the United Nations. This short article will focus upon a few current developments in the housing rights debate, concluding with several remarks as to what the 1990s might bring in terms of the right to housing. The late 1980s brought some positive steps towards substantiating housing rights; however the last ten years of the millennium will stand central in the struggle for the housing rights of all humanity — poor and rich, South and North.
