Reference static pressure measurements in wind tunnels
Abstract An investigation into the model and full scale pressure field surrounding the Silsoe Structures Building shows that static probes must be placed in a suitable position to escape unwanted static pressure effects. Comparisons are made showing that by variation of the position of the static reference probe in the tunnel the fit between model and full scale data can be improved. This is presented in part one. In part two a survey is presented of the static variations inside a tunnel. Variations down the tunnel length as predicted by theory are presented, cross tunnel variations caused by irregularity in the tunnel structure are shown and vertical gradients in the boundary layer are also plotted. A suggestion that the vertical gradient is caused by turbulence effects on the pitot static probe is briefly examined. The measurements were taken in the Surrey T1 tunnel and the UWO BLWT1 tunnel. Where possible the conclusions have been generalised to be relevant to most tunnels.
