Cellular radio is being described by its advocates as a revolution in telecommunications. During a period in which we are assailed by such claims from communications and information technology companies almost daily, it is increasingly hard to separate the hype from the product. But the cellular concept does have a great deal to recommend it — which puts cellular radio ahead in its claim to be revolutionary. In this Analysis we examine the technical constraints and opportunities which led to the cellular idea, and then describe the concept in some detail. The uses of cellular radio are then discussed from a practical standpoint, and the services now becoming available from British Telecom and from Racal Vodafone are compared, including their costs in use.
