Apparatus for raising a post is provided having a carriage (23) mounted on a frame (1) for movement between a lowered position and a raised position, and a clamp assembly (5) mounted on the carriage (23). The clamp assembly has clamping members (33) movable towards each other to grip a post therebetween with the carriage (23) in the lowered position and the carriage is moved to the raised position to remove the post from the ground. The pulling force to remove the post acts in a vertical direction only so that bending forces transverse to the pulling direction are avoided and frame (1) rests on the ground when removing a post so that forces to remove the post are transferred to the ground.
