A lockable window winder (1) for a hingedly connected window, the winder including a body (2) which is mountable to a fixed surface adjacent the window and an actuating element (7)movably mounted at its proximal end to the body and connectable to the window at its distal end, such that movement of the actuating element causes the window to move between a closed and an open position. Also included is an operating mechanism mounted to the body for moving the actuating element, the operating mechanism including drive means and a handle (15). Locking means (21,22) are provided on the body which are configured to be moveable between an unlocked position in which the operating mechanism can move the actuating element and a locking position in which the locking means acts directly on or obstructs the handle to thereby prohibit movement of the actuating element. In one form the winder is provided as a complete unit including the actuating element. In another form a conversion assembly is provided that converts an existing non locking window winder to a lockable winder. This is done by providing a replacement cover that includes the locking mechanism along with an optional replacement handle. Figure 1 \OL \'3 1l
