The disclosed is an elevating and lowering counterweighted transmission mechanism which is suited for gates. A external spur gear operates an endless roller chain within one hollow post 35 that operates a parallel-rule type of chain and sprocket counter weighted mechanism 68 cooperatively in both hollow posts 35 and 34 where attached between the tops of hollow posts 34 and 35 a hollow member 73 conceals a shaft 98 with bevel gears 43 and 49 attached at either end that connect bevel gears 42 and 53 that operate the chain and sprocket counterweighted mechanisms 68.
