The invention relates to the provision of bases for poles, such as wooden utility poles and like supports used for holding electric distribution and transmission lines, and methods of providing or replacing the bases of existing poles (pole base replacement). 5 A support assembly is provided that can be installed in place of a removed pole base to support an upper portion of the pole. A support assembly is also provided that allows passage of fluid away from the pole. A method is also disclosed of utilising a template, which includes a frame for surrounding the pole, the internal periphery of the frame being predetermined so as to be commensurate with the internal periphery of the 0 support assembly.
