A palisade and a method for ameliorating erosion of particulate material including sand are disclosed. The palisade (1) is erected to face water having a to and fro action, is formed from a multiplicity of like posts (3) spaced apart along a line and 5 having their lower ends embedded in the particulate matter (9). Each of the posts is like orientated and has a substantially uniform shape. The shape of, and spacing between, the posts permitting the advancing water to flow between the posts more quickly than the retreating water, whereby the particulate matter is disposed to be entrained with, and carried through, the palisade by the advancing waters, but not 10 entrained with the retreating waters and thereby deposited behind the palisade. 5514BF-AU 8 Fa.3
