A subsurface water collector 10, not including a discrete plastic or metal tank of solid construction to define a reservoir, the collector 10 including: 5 an ground cavity 20 formed at and below ground level G; at least one stack 50 of perforated pipe 60 laid in the ground cavity 20 and arranged in an inner vertical column 52 with a hollow centre (see Fig. 5b) to define a substantially central vertical cylindrical inner cavity 54, and one or more outer vertical cavities 56a-c surrounding the vertical column 52, the vertical cavities 0 56a-c in length extending at least the height of the stack 50; and a vertical particulate column (46a-c also respectively in the location of 56a-c) of particulate material 40 having discrete particle sizes of between 10mm - 30mm average diameter that fills the inner cavity 54 to a level at or above an uppermost portion 58 of the stack 50, 5 wherein the vertical particulate column 46 provides a load-bearing support above the ground cavity 20.
