A soil sample collection device comprising a laterally-undivided, tubular body divided longitudinally into distal and proximal parts; a thin, durable, extensively re-useable, metal liner to receive soil samples, said liner being 5 easily loaded into and removed from said body; a thin, durable, extensively re-useable core catcher positioned adjacent the open, distal end of said body to restrict the outflow of said soil samples; a retainer positioned adjacent the open, distal end of said body and securing said metal liner and said core catcher in position within said body; a spacer sleeve locating said retainer; an 10 interchangeable, ground-penetrating tip removably fixed to the open, distal end of said body; and an adaptor removably fixed to the proximal end of said body and by means of which said soil sample collection device is mounted upon deployment and drive means employed to insert said device into, and withdraw it from, the ground.
