ENERGY STORAGE AND RECOVERY IN UNDERGROUND SALT CAVERNS
ENERGY STORAGE AND RECOVERY IN UNDERGROUND SALT CAVERNS The present invention provides a method for storing and recovering energy in two or more interconnected underground salt caverns. Similar to a conventional pumped storage hydro power station, the potential energy is used for energy storage and the kinetic energy is used for energy recovery. For energy storage liquid medium is pumped from the lower cavern to the upper cavern. For energy recovery liquid medium is drained through a combined generator/pump back into the lower cavern. The electrical energy produced in this way is diverted to surface through a power cable. Sodium chloride (NaCI) brine and compressed nitrogen or fuel gas are the ideal storage media, but the concept can also be implemented with the usage of other liquid and gaseous media.
