A COMPOSITION, METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CAPPING INDUSTRIAL SOFT TAILINGS BY IN SITU POLYMERIZATION
The present invention provides a composition, method and apparatus for capping industrial soft tailings deposits by in situ polymerization on top of soft tailings deposits to facilitate tailings reclamation process. It uses approximately 75-88% mature fine tailings (MFT) and I 0 -18% chemicals and 1.2-80% added water to form a 5-15 cm layer of polymer capping on top of the soft tailings deposits. The MFT contains 25-53 w% fine solids, and the tailings deposits can be any soft tailings deposits with solids content >= 45%, such as composite tailings, non-segregating tailings, thickened tailings and centrifuged tailings. The resultant polymer layer is able to support heavy reclamation equipment after completion of the in situ polymerization process. The polymer capping layer can be placed spot by spot to form a passway network for heavy reclamation equipments to travel and do subsequent reclamation, e.g. filling the cells with sand and/or soil.
