A hybrid structural/thermal caisson for a building foundation, the hybrid structural/thermal caisson including at least one vertically oriented rebar cage for containment within a vertical building foundation hole i) at least one heat exchanger; and ii) at least one energy storage unit including at least one phase change material (PCM); wherein the at least one heat exchanger and the at least one energy storage unit are contained within the at least one vertically oriented rebar cage, and the building foundation hole further includes a load bearing structural supporting material and a thermal contact material for thermal contact between the at least one heat exchanger and the at least one energy storage unit.
