Sliding member
A sliding member contains silicon nitride grains, and a silicon nitride sintering body having a sintering aid component in a range of 2 to 15 mass %. The sliding member is bearing ball. In the silicon nitride sintering body as the sintering aid component, the content of the rare earth element is preferably in a range of 1 to 6 mass %, and the content of A1 is in a range of 0.5 to 6 mass %, and at the content of at least one metal element selected from titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), hafnium (Hf), tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo), tantalum (Ta), niobium (Nb), and chromium (Cr) in the form of a simple substance of metal element or a compound of metal elements is in the range of 0.01 to 5 mass %. The silicon nitride grains contain needle crystal grains each having a long diameter L of 10 [Mu]m or less and a ratio (L/S) of the long diameter L to a short diameter S of 5 or more, by 50% to 80% in area ratio in a crystalline structure of the silicon nitride sintered compact. The maximum diameter of the voids existing in the silicon nitride sintered compact can be made 3 [Mu]m or less. Further, the number of the voids can be made 5 or less in a region of 30*30 [Mu]m.
