The invention is therefore directed to a ceramic or glass-ceramic reactor tube that is resistant to corrosion by bismuth containing, and bismuth and alkali containing, compounds at elevated temperatures (700DEGC) in an oxidizing environment, a method for forming a protective coating consisting of a silicon dioxide layer and a bismuth silicate layer making the resultant tube corrosion resistant under the conditions of the aerosol reaction, and the use of this tube to make high bismuth containing, and bismuth and alkali containing glasses.
