The invention provides a lightweight refractory material and a preparation method thereof. The lightweight refractory material consists of the following components in parts by mass: 5-80 parts of furnace slag, 3-60 parts of clay, 2-15 parts of high alumina bauxite, 5-20 parts of barium carbonate, 10-30 parts of anti-crack fibers, 4-8 parts of sodium lignin sulfonate, 0-3 parts of an auxiliary agent and 40-80 parts of water. The lightweight refractory material provided by the invention has a netlike microstructure and is small in macroscopic foam pore structure size and high in material strength, the anti-crack fibers are added into the lightweight refractory material to further increase the mechanical strength of the lightweight refractory material, and the preparation method is simple and efficient.
