The invention discloses a novel thermal insulation material for an external wall. The novel thermal insulation material comprises the following components in parts by weight: 12-15 parts of coal ash, 20-25 parts of cement, 15-20 parts of composite thermal insulation aggregate, 1-2 parts of radiation preventing agent metatitanic acid, 18-23 parts of asbestos fiber, 3-5 parts of a foaming agent, 1.2-1.5 parts of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, and 0.5-1 part of coupling agent aluminate. The thermal insulation material prepared by the invention has the advantages of being excellent in thermal insulation effect, low in density, high in tensile strength, long in service life and the like.
