Provided are an alumina-based fibrous mass which has a high areal pressure and which is applicable to holding materials for exhaust gas purification devices and a process for producing the alumina-based fibrous mass. The alumina-based fibrous mass has a chemical composition containing 70-90%, excluding 90%, Al2O3 and has a total pore volume of 0.0055 ml/g or less.
