A machine for cleaning ballast (7) of a ballast bed of a track (3) is equipped with a ballast pick up device (8) for picking up ballast which is laid underneath the track. A ballast discharge point (10) serves to introduce the cleaned ballast (7) into a gap (12) which is formed in the ballast bed by the extraction of ballast, in order to restore the ballast bed. Arranged in the junction region (13) of the gap (12) in the ballast bed and a ballast bed of a neighbouring track, adjoining when viewed in the transverse direction of the machine, is a support wall (16) which runs in the longitudinal direction of the machine, is positioned between the ballast pick up device (8) and the ballast discharge point (10) and is connected to the machine.
