The invention discloses a preparation method for a porous aluminum titanate ceramic. The preparation method comprises: by taking tetrabutyl titanate and aluminum nitrate as a precursor, preparing xerogel powder by virtue of a sol-gel method as a raw material; adding a pore forming substance, a fluxing agent and an additive to be mixed; and then adding an adhesive to be mixed, mould-pressed and calcined to prepare the porous aluminum titanate ceramic. The preparation method for the porous aluminum titanate ceramic disclosed by the invention is simple in process, and the prepared aluminum titanate ceramic is high in porosity and good in mechanical property.
