The invention discloses a novel external wall insulation material and a preparation method thereof and belongs to the technical field of building materials. The novel external wall insulation material comprises the following raw materials in parts by weight: 20-40 parts of calcium carbonate powder, 10-20 parts of sodium silicate, 10-20 parts of coal gangue, 2-4 parts of a thickening agent, 15-25 parts of water, 2-3 parts of basalt fibers and 4-8 parts of antimony trioxide. The novel external wall insulation material has the advantages of being good in heat insulation effect, excellent in heat and sound insulation effect, low in water absorbability, resistant to low temperature, resistant to acid and alkali and the like, and the preparation method is simple and is suitable for mass production.
