The invention discloses a water stopping method applied to a joint of a hydropower station and a water stopping structure thereof. The method comprises the following steps: firstly carrying out surface treatment, then mounting a rubber rod and caulking a plastic packing, and finally scraping polyurea elastomers out. The water stopping structure formed according to the method comprises a concrete panel (2) with a joint (1), wherein a joint reservation groove (3) is formed above the joint (1); a rubber rod (4) is connected with the interior of the joint reservation groove (3); a plastic packing (5) is arranged above the rubber rod (4); a base fabric (6) is arranged above the plastic packing (5); polyurea elastomers (7) are arranged on the upper side and the lower side of the base fabric (6). According to the water stopping method and the water stopping structure, the rubber rod is used for preventing the water pressure change and the joint deformation from causing damage to the plastic packing; the base fabric is used for dispersing the stress in the polyurea elastomers; the damage to the concrete panel can be avoided; the structural stability is improved; the advantages of convenience in construction and excellent water-stopping effect are achieved.
