The invention discloses a highway guardrail device and an installation method, and the device comprises a vertical column, the bottom of which extends into the ground; a guardrail which comprises a metal fixing plate arranged in a wave shape, a flexible buffer cushion layer arranged outside the metal fixing plate, and a protection mechanism arranged outside the buffer cushion layer; the metal fixing plate is fixedly connected to the top of the column; the protection mechanism comprises a protection layer which is a hard plate body arranged outside the buffer cushion layer; the driving motor isarranged below the metal fixing plate, and an output shaft of the driving motor is connected to the protective layer; and a control module which is connected with the driving motor; the control module controls the driving motor to drive the protective layer to be switched between the exterior and the lower portion of the buffer cushion layer according to vehicle flow and weather data obtained byan existing road traffic system and an existing weather forecast system. It is guaranteed that the guardrail device has enough strength, the dynamic shearing force borne by a collided vehicle can be reduced to the maximum extent, and therefore the safety of passengers in the vehicle is protected.
