The invention discloses a shock absorber for a building. The shock absorber comprises a shell body, a screw rod, a flywheel, a planetary steel ball stepless speed change device, a nut and a shell bodybearing, wherein the screw rod is fixed on a foundation, the screw rod and the nut form a screw pair, the nut is connected with the flywheel, the flywheel is connected with the planetary steel ball stepless speed change device, the flywheel is mounted at the shell bearing, and the shell body is fixedly connected with the building. External impact energy borne by the building is converted into kinetic energy of the planetary steel ball stepless speed change device to be released through the transmission of the screw rod and the nut rather than a traditional shock absorption mode through a modethat the energy is absorbed by the shock absorber, so that the use and maintenance cost of a building shock absorption system is reduced.
