The invention discloses ceramsite sand for casting and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method comprises the following steps: grinding and screening fly ash and bauxite powder to obtain fly ash mixed powder; adding slurry consisting of polyvinyl alcohol, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, polyether silicone oil and water into the fly ash mixed powder, and grinding to obtain fly ash mixed slurry; centrifuging and drying the fly ash mixed slurry to obtain ceramsite sand green pellets; putting the ceramsite sand green pellets into a rotary kiln, sequentially sintering for 100 minutesat 500 DEG C, sintering for 2 hours at 1000 DEG C, sintering for 100 minutes at 1200 DEG C and sintering for 2 hours at 1300 DEG C, and then naturally cooling to obtain ceramsite sand balls. Accordingto the preparation method of the ceramsite sand for casting provided by the invention, the ceramsite sand prepared from the solid waste fly ash has the advantages of high roundness, good fluidity, controllable particle distribution, high strength and no dust in the preparation process.
