The invention discloses a tailing pond dam break simulation system and method. The system comprises a tailing pond area, a tailing pond channel, a downstream riverway, a water supply device, a rainfall device and a monitoring device. The tailing pond area is located on the upstream of the tailing pond channel, the tailing pond channel is formed in the upstream of the upstream riverway, the water supply device is arranged on the upstream of the tailing pond area and the upstream of the downstream riverway, and is used for providing upstream incoming water of the tailing pond area and upstream incoming water of the downstream riverway, the rainfall device is arranged above the tailing pond area, and sprays water to the tailing pond area so as to simulate the influence of rainfall on tailingpond dam break, the monitoring device comprises flow detection devices, water quality detection devices and observation devices which are used for real-time monitoring of flow, water quality and imagechanges in the tailing pond dam break process, the system can simulate migration, evolution and changes of drained water sand in the tailing pond channel and the downstream riverway, and the influence of the drained water sand on the water amount and the water quality of the downstream riverway in the tailing pond dam break process and after dam break.
