The invention discloses lightweight high-strength ceramsite and a preparation method thereof. The ceramsite is prepared from the following raw materials in percentage by mass: 40-70% of alkaline mud,25-55% of fly ash and the balance of an additive. The preparation method of the ceramsite comprises the following steps: sequentially carrying out primary mixing, grinding, secondary mixing, granulation, drying, screening, preheating, roasting and cooling on raw materials according to a certain ratio to obtain the ceramsite. The ceramsite is simple in preparation method and wide in raw material source, waste can be turned into wealth, the environment is protected, recycling of alkali mud resources and fly ash discharged in the sodium silicate production process is achieved, and good social andeconomic benefits are achieved.
