The invention relates to the technical field of intelligent agriculture, in particular relates to a gate valve for automatic water level control in a rice field and control method thereof. The gate valve comprises a base (1), a gate plate (2), a control device (3) and a driving structure (4), wherein the gate plate (2) is fixedly connected with the driving structure (4) and slides up and down along with the driving structure (4), and thereof a drainage channel (12) is opened to communicate with an external channel (7405); the driving structure (4) is controlled by the control device (3); and the control device (3) and the driving structure (4) are powered by a solar panel (6). The devices are interconnected in an ad-hoc networking mode, are not limited by the deployment distance and quantity, and can cover a large area without being affected by the terrain. The gate valve can also be opened by manual operation. The gate valve has an extendable characteristic. As long as a terminal device is added, the control range of the system can be increased. Moreover, the driving mode and the structure are simple, wiring cost is reduced, and thus the water level control in the rice field is intelligent.
