The invention discloses a water evaporation inhibiting device capable of automatically covering a water surface and a method for inhibiting water evaporation. The water evaporation inhibiting device is composed of a plurality of triangular prism particles which are completely the same in material, shape and structure and are evenly and flatly laid on the water surface; and the triangular prism particles are of regular triangular prism structures and are provided with four faces, each face of each triangular prism particle is in a regular triangle shape, and under the action of buoyancy, one surface of each triangular prism particle is always parallel to the water surface; and the triangular prism particles are hollow or solid, when the triangular prism particles are poured onto the water surface or are overlapped and stacked on the water surface due to other disturbances, the triangular prism particles can be automatically eliminated and stacked under the action of gravity to achieve auniform floating state on the water surface, and water evaporation is restrained by scattering the water evaporation restraining device horizontally. The water evaporation inhibiting device is low inproduction cost and good in anti-evaporation effect, can be widely applied to reservoirs in high-evaporation-capacity areas such as northwest arid areas to inhibit water evaporation, and has good social benefits and economic benefits.
