The invention discloses an automatic grinding method and system for a steel rail grinding wagon. The method comprises the steps obtaining form detection data of a steel rail through a preset steel rail detection device, and automatically generating a grinding scheme according to the form detection data; making a grinding device grind the steel rail according to the automatically generated grindingscheme; and in a grinding process, monitoring whether an obstacle exists on a grinding line or not through an obstacle monitoring device, and when the obstacle is monitored, adjusting the grinding device. In the invention, the preset steel rail is detected to obtain form data of the steel rail, and then the corresponding grinding scheme is generated; and according to the polishing scheme, the steel rail can be polished, the polishing process is detected in the whole process, the obstacles on the line can be detected, polishing work can be performed on a turnout, intelligent control over steelrail polishing work is achieved, procedures are reduced, cost is saved, and polishing precision is improved.
