The invention belongs to the technical field of concrete retarder, and particularly relates to a concrete retarder and a preparation method thereof. The invention provides a concrete retarder on the first hand. The concrete retarder comprises a first retarding component, a second retarding component and zinc sulfate, wherein the weight ratio of the first retarding component to the second retarding component to the zinc sulfate is 10: (1-4) : (0.1-1); the particle size ratio of the first retarding component to the second retarding component is (3-10): 1. The invention further provides a preparation method of the concrete retarder. The preparation method comprises the following steps: S1, treating the second retarding component in water at normal temperature for 2-5 minutes; and S2, uniformly mixing the treated first retarding component, second retarding component and zinc sulfate in proportion to obtain the concrete retarder.
