The invention provides a colored asphalt concrete and a preparation method thereof. The colored asphalt concrete comprises, by weight, 12-58 parts of steel slag, 24-70 parts of gravel, 7.5-12.8 parts of mineral powder and 5-13.8 parts of new asphalt, and the coating amount of a colored coating is 1-1.5 Kg/m<2>; and the colored coating contains 0.005-0.012 part of a rare earth compound. By adding a tiny amount of the rare earth compound, the antiskid performance and color retention performance of the colored coating can be improved, so that the actual application performance of the colored asphalt concrete is better, and the actual application prospect is good; and the durability, high temperature resistance and rutting deformation resistance of the colored asphalt concrete are improved through combination of the steel slag and the gravel in a specific proportion.
