The invention provides a veneered fibrous insulator (10). One or more surfaces of a fibrous insulating material of the veneered fibrous insulator have a veneer (12). The veneer provides improved surface quality, high and controlled adhesion, and is easy to manufacture. The veneer in the invention comprises pre-applied adhesives (22 and 24) that are thermally activated to provide adhesion to the fibrous insulator. The veneer may be input into a glass fiber forming section of a fibrous insulator production line. Optionally, the veneer may be applied to an uncured liner (64) which has not undergone curing or to a cured fibrous insulator. As another alternative, a moisture barrier layer (14) may be attached to a surface, opposite the veneer, of the insulator.
